Buffalo RunningBuffalo Chips Welcome!!

Fall 2016

Welcome (or welcome back) to the Buffalo Chips youth running team.

The Buffalo Chips youth team is a developmental team designed to help each athlete progress as best

s/he is able. We work with all ages and abilities. We are a TEAM. We compete regularly to see

improvement. Cross country and relays are TEAM SPORTS!

We have two seasons:

Fall XC season from late August through early December.

Spring Track/Road Racing season from the last week of Feb through early July.

Practice times/dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-7:15 (4:30 later in the season), Sat 8 am

Locations: Weekdays: (usually) Willow HILLS XC course behind Folsom HS

Saturdays: (usually) Willow Creek off Folsom Blvd, across from the light rail station.

Parking is about $10. Park at light rail and walk, drop off your kids, stay with your car or

buy a Poppy Pass for parking. The fine is more than $70!

Registration:

1. ALL youth must be members of Buffalo Chips: www.buffalochips.com Update your

membership each year. Use the Youth or Family membership price.

2. Later in the season, all athletes considering participation in the National Championship

will have to join the sponsoring organization. More info to follow.

Practices: Come ready to run. Bring water, wear running clothes (preferably not cotton). If it is cold,

wear layers. Eat a snack after school so you have some fuel in you. Bring a pad or towel for core work

at the end of practice

Watches: ALL athletes 9+ years old should be wearing a watch to practice. They should know how to

start, stop and clear the stopwatch feature.’

Inhalers: ALL athletes with asthma (exercise induced or allergy induced) should have their inhalers

WITH them in the car or sports bag. I am willing to lend mine in a true emergency, but an athlete with

asthma should come prepared. If your doctor recommends using your inhaler before exercise, be sure

to do so.

Uniforms: Singlets: $25. I have them in stock and will bring them to designated practices for

purchase. They are worn with black bottoms (shorts, leggings). We had trouble with shorts at track

nationals this summer because of different colored trims. Each age group team will make a decision on

shorts prior to XC Nationals this fall. If your leggings are not black, wear black shorts over them in

cold weather.

I am also publishing a separate Racing Schedule (tentative)

Summer 2016 Buffalo Chips

July 30, 2016 – Junior Olympic National Championship and 30K

What a morning!

Our own Riley Chamberlain (age 12) took 2nd at the Junior Olympic National Championship in the 11/12 girls 3000m race this morning with an 11 sec pr!  In a perfectly run race, she and 3 others pulled into a front pack early and eventually finished with a solid second.

Natalie, meanwhile, was in Felton, CA, running her first 30K on the trails.  She was 21st overall and, of course, first in her age group! Dad, Brian, was 3rd (and he was apparently able to keep up with Natalie!)

Our other National Qualifier, Collin Graham (11) finished mid-pack and was slightly off his pr, then came down with his sister’s stomach flu shortly after the race finished.  Great first National appearance, Collin!  Looking forward to next year when you are top of your age group!

Regional Meet Recap:

Wow! What a weekend! I’m so proud of all our kids!

Congratulations to the 11/12 boys and girls relays for qualifying for the National Meet. Your event will compete Wednesday, July 27 at 4:30 pm at Sac State.

Also, Riley and Collin will be competing in the 11/12 3000m race on Sat. July 30 at 8 am. Their teammates will turn out in force in gold t-shirts and LINE the fencing so we can cheer them around all 7.5 laps!

Other highlights:

  1. Despite the heat, we had a 50% pr rate in the individual events. There were a lot of runs right on pr’s, which are probably true pr’s because of the heat. In addition, most of our relay runners were on or bested their pr’s in their legs of the relays.
  2. We had some BIG prs: (hope I don’t miss anyone)
  •  Andrew: 19 sec 1500, 15 sec 800
  •  Collin: 55 sec 3000, 14 sec 1500
  • Mateus: 10 sec 400, 13 sec 800
  • Sami: 3 sec 400, 6 sec 800
  • Sebastian: 27 sec 1500
  • Trevor: 3 sec 400,
  • Spencer: 4 sec 1500, 2 sec 800
  • Sage: 5 sec 400
  • Leo: 14 sec 1500
  • Grace: – automatic pr in the 200 hurdles – never ran it before!
  • Karissa: 3 sec 800
  • Riley: 23 sec 3000,
  • Angeline: 10 sec 1500, 14 sec 800
  • Olivia: 6 sec 1500
  • Natalie: 13 sec 3000

Other awesome moments:

  1.  Hannah W. picked herself up TWICE after being tripped in the 1500 and finished the race
  2. Leo overcame some anxiety that occurred during the start of the 400 and went on to help his relay team make it to Nationals.
  3. Sage started mid-season, stuck with it and got some nice pr’s
  4. Anyone watching Angeline’s 1500 realized the incredible maturity she has gained this season as an athlete!
  5. Our 9/10 relays came up short on Sunday afternoon, but in some wicked heat, every single one of those athletes gave everything they had – pr’s in the heat!
  6. Success was handled with humility and disappointment with grace.
  7. Once the tent was down and I checked our area for trash – there was NOTHING but two half empty water bottles that were easily tossed. NO trash, NO dropped food, NO leftover stuff. Wow!

I have the privilege of coaching some of the greatest kids!

OK, let’s finish up this season with some strong work.
